Forwarding your calls to LEX takes only a few minutes. Below, find the setup for your specific phone system, along with the settings we recommend for attorneys.
Types of Call Forwarding
Most carriers offer a few standard forwarding options. Which one you choose determines when calls reach your LEX receptionist.
- Standard (forward all): every call goes straight to LEX, without ringing your phone first.
- Busy: calls forward to LEX only when your main line is already in use.
- No-answer: calls ring your phone first, then forward to LEX after a set number of rings.
- Scheduled: calls forward based on the day or time – useful for directing calls to LEX outside office hours.
Each type is activated and deactivated with a carrier-specific code – see the table in Section 1, or your provider’s portal in Section 2.
For a more customized schedule – directing calls to LEX on specific days or at specific times – check with your phone carrier; most can accommodate this. If your firm already uses a call system with built-in routing, this schedule can also be set up directly within your LEX Reception account.
The Best Practice: Forward When Unanswered
We recommend Forward When Unanswered, rather than forwarding every call.
- Your phone rings first, so you can pick up when you’re available.
- If you’re in court, with a client, or otherwise engaged, the call transfers to your LEX receptionist.
This way, clients always reach a person – either you or your LEX team – and nothing depends on a call being caught at the right moment.
Which Phone System Do You Use?
Find your setup below and go straight to that section.
- Option A: Traditional Landline or Standard Wireless Carrier
- Option B: Cloud-Based / VoIP Business Phone
- Option C: Personal Smartphone Settings
Section 1: Standard Carrier Call Forwarding (Dial Codes)
If you have a traditional landline or standard wireless service, forwarding is set from the phone itself. Dial the code for your carrier and forwarding preference, followed by your dedicated LEX Reception number, then press Call.
| Carrier | Forward All Calls | Forward Unanswered | Cancel |
|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T | *21*[LEX Number]# | *61*[LEX Number]# | Dial #21# or #61# |
| Verizon & UScellular | *72 [LEX Number] | *71 [LEX Number] | Dial *73 |
| T-Mobile | 21*[LEX Number]# | 61*[LEX Number]# | Dial ##21# |
Replace [LEX Number] with your 10-digit dedicated LEX Reception number. Listen for a confirmation tone or message before hanging up – this confirms the setting has taken effect.
Section 2: Cloud-Based Business Phone Systems (VoIP)
If your office uses a cloud phone system, forwarding is managed through your provider’s online portal or mobile app. Look for a setting named Call Handling, Routing, or Call Forwarding.
Other providers: if you use another provider, refer to their official forwarding instructions linked below:
Section 3: Mobile Phone Settings
If your firm runs primarily from a cell phone, forwarding can be set directly in your device settings.
A Few Technical Notes
Carrier networks change from time to time. A couple of things worth knowing:
- Dual SIM / eSIM users: if one device carries two numbers, forwarding can occasionally be blocked while you’re on a call on the other line.
- Carrier spam filters: aggressive filters, particularly on Verizon, can sometimes intercept forwarded calls.
If you notice any routing issues, let us know – we’re glad to help troubleshoot your specific carrier setup.
